Fire Cider is an herbal remedy that has long been made and shared by herbalists and home cooks worldwide. This warming vinegar infusion has strong roots in the Appalachians as a tonic to help ward off cold and flu. Every household can have their own version of fire cider but the base ingredients remain the same; onions, garlic, ginger, horseradish, hot pepper, and some honey added later. Other variations even include pomegranates, oranges, and sumac.
Recently, a larger herbal company patented the name fire cider, restricting small herbal companies all over the United States from independently producing their own version of the product. In response herbal enthusiasts everywhere are gathering to teach and share a tradition in folk medicine-making that rightfully belongs to each and every one of us.
Join Cara-Lee as we discuss the evolution of fire cider; its medicinal and nutritional properties; and how to incorporate fire cider into your own cooking. About the Instructor:
Cara-Lee spent most of her childhood wandering the wild outdoors of Southern Africa. An Exercise Science graduate, she later went on to study at the Botanologos School of Herbal Studies. Cara strives to build relationships with local farmers and engage community interest in natural healing. She is especially passionate about creating healthy meals, traditional beverages, and craft cocktails from indigenous foods and ethically wildcrafted ingredients. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health; a specialized course in therapeutic diet and whole foods cooking.
